The Custodians of Memory

In the labyrinthine alleys of Aligarh, history is not merely recorded; it is breathed, lived, and quietly slipping away. We are a collective of travelers, historians, and storytellers devoted to preserving the ephemeral rhythms of this ancient city before they fade into the modern hum.

Our Quest

The City of Locks holds secrets far more intricate than its famed brass mechanisms. Our mission is an act of meticulous documentation—a quiet rebellion against forgetting. We traverse the old bazaars, sit in the courtyards of decaying havelis, and listen.

Through atmospheric photography, rigorous archival research, and the transcription of oral histories, we weave together the disparate threads of Aligarh’s tapestry. We seek not just the grand narratives, but the intimate, daily rhythms that truly define a place.

“To document a fading city is to hold a mirror to time itself, catching the reflection just before the glass shatters.”

Lead Curator

Aditya Kumar

A backpacker turned historian, Aditya Kumar found himself unable to leave Aligarh after what was meant to be a brief stopover. Drawn to the dichotomy of its bustling university life and crumbling Mughal-era architecture, he began a visual diary that evolved into Camera Backpackers.

His approach favors natural light and analog techniques, seeking to capture the soul of the structure rather than just its form. When not behind the lens, he can be found parsing through municipal records or sharing chai with the city's elders.
